During the COVID-19 pandemic, most offices around the Globe are shut down, and people are working from home. Last month Google extended work from home policy until July next year.
It looks like Facebook has joined Google as well; Facebook is now allowing its employees to work from home till middle next year. A spokesperson informed Reuters “Based on guidance from health and government experts, as well as decisions are drawn from our internal discussions about these matters, we are allowing employees to continue voluntarily working from home until July 2021.”
Facebook has also provided its employees with an additional $1,000 so that employees can get the equipment necessary for working from home.
Late last month Apple confirmed that their staff wouldn’t return to their offices until next year and the return to the usual way of functioning from offices would depend entirely upon when a vaccine or any other treatment will be available.
On the other hand, Twitter has acknowledged that staff members can work remotely from home forever if they want.
These decisions make us think if working in office environments is becoming irrelevant if working in offices with the risk of spread of several diseases through contact is even worth it if all the work can be completed at home.
But again working from home has its drawback, since people are more prone to hackers as a firewall doesn’t protect them.
When the Facebook spokesperson was asked about her opinion on working from home forever, she didn’t respond. This shows that most companies with several offices set up all over the world aren’t comfortable with employees working at home forever.
A Facebook spokeswoman did not respond when we asked whether the company will offer its staff the option to work remotely
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, has told that after a decade the half of the employees will be working from home. Still, specific roles cannot be performed at home like hardware development, data centres, recruiting, policy and partnerships.
