Xiaomi is seemingly engaged in a new ‘paper’ mode to include in its display settings in MIUI 12. This will reportedly be a part of an ‘enhanced Reading Mode’ within the next-gen customized Xiaomi ROM. It is alleged so as to add a paper-like texture to the display to additional cut back eye-strain as in comparison with common evening mode. The new setting was discovered within the MIUI 12 China Beta ROM launched on June 30 (v20.6.30). It was first reported by Polish weblog, MIUI Polska, run by XDA Senior Member, kacskrz.

As per the report, the ‘Paper’ option can be accessible in MIUI 12’s Reading Mode settings. It will apparently add a “coarse paper-like texture” to all components on the screen, making it appear like an e-ink display. There’s no more data on the upcoming function for now. However, we hope to get more data sooner reasonably than later.

Meanwhile, the Paper option will apparently not be the one change to the Reading Mode in MIUI 12. Xiaomi could also reportedly include three new choices to regulate the display’s color temperature in its next-gen customized Android ROM. According to the report, the new choices are ‘Full Colors’, ‘Light Colors’, and ‘Black and White’.

While the primary choice could have no reduction in color saturation other than the common yellow overlay in Reading mode, the second choice will deliver pale colors much like the ‘Chromatic’ studying mode in OnePlus’ OxygenOS. The Black and White choice is self-explanatory.

These features have no official confirmation from Xiaomi as to when they are gonna come. But we have fingers crossed to get the update as soon as possible.
