EMUI 11 phones to be able to update to Harmony OS

Huawei’s EMUI has been the custom Android software on its smartphones till date, but in 2019 Google stopped its Google Play Services for Huawei smartphones. As a result, the Huawei smartphones didn’t have Google PlayStore and other services which put the Huawei Smartphones at a significant disadvantage compared to its competition.

Huawei has been developing its OS, named HarmonyOS to replace EMUI on its smartphones. Recently, Huawei revealed its Harmony OS 2.0 and confirmed that it would power its smartphones starting in 2021.

Huawei also revealed that devices with EMUI 11 will be able to update to Harmony OS. However, Huawei didn’t clarify if all of its devices will get the update or not or if there will be an option to roll back to the EMUI from HarmonyOS if someone wanted to.

Huawei representative confirmed “Yes, devices running the new distributed-technology based EMUI 11 will be eligible for upgrade to Harmony OS in the future,” wrote a Huawei representative to Android Authority.”

Huawei has a timeline to update its products with the in-house HarmonyOS which is mentioned as follows:

  • On September 10th, all its low power devices like wearables, smart TVs, car infotainment systems will receive the update.
  • Its mid-range products with less than 4 GB RAM will get the update early next year.
  • While its Flagship Smartphones with more than 4 GB RAM will get it October next Year.

It is yet to be seen how Hauwei’s HarmonyOS will compare to EMUI. With HMS Core already boasting over 96,000 apps which will most probably make its way to HarmonyOS it seems like it is heading the right way.
